Does using lead-free solder affect my tip life?

Chris Stuber
General FAQs

The answer is Yes.

Most of the lead-free alloys proposed or sold to date are very rich in tin, so one must be specially careful to monitor tip corrosion and erosion. Tin and iron react at high temperatures, and we all know what tin does to copper, so (again) it is always wise to work at the lowest possible temperature.

Hakko puts a thick iron (Fe) plating on their tips, which will make them last longer.
